When should I start looking for housing for next year?

November 4, 2017

Waiting until the last minute to find housing can be a dangerous game to play, especially because people are starting to put their down payments on housing earlier and earlier every year.

So when is the right time to start looking for a place to live next year and when is too late?

The easy answer to this question is that the peak leasing season is from mid October to mid February.

Yes, some people start to sign as early as a full year in advance (September) but those are only a few, which means that if you begin in October, you will have the biggest selection of housing.

Once we start to approach Christmas, half your options are going to be gone, and typically by February, you'll be picking up the remains what which apartments are still available.

This seems to be common among all housing units around the University of Minnesota.

Yes, you will almost always be able to find a place to live, but if you want to look for the place of your dreams, you should start touring earlier rather than later.
